There’s a short window in spring when stinging nettle is at its best.
The young shoots are tender, vibrant, and full of life. They haven’t toughened yet, and interestingly, they’re far less “stingy” to handle when picked correctly.
This is when nettle shifts from being a nuisance in the garden… to one of the most useful plants you can bring into your daily routine.
Why Spring Nettles Are Different
Young nettle leaves are rich in:
Natural enzymes
Vitamin C
Iron
Magnesium
Calcium
Chlorophyll
Plant compounds that help reduce oxidative stress
At this stage, the plant is in active growth. Everything is moving, building, and regenerating.
And that’s exactly what it offers the body.
WHAT NETTLE TEA SUPPORTS
A simple cup of nettle tea, taken regularly, can do far more than most people expect. It works quietly in the background, supporting the body where it needs it most.
Antioxidant support
Nettle helps reduce free radical activity in the body.
This matters more than people realise. Oxidative stress is linked to fatigue, inflammation, skin issues, and slower recovery.
A daily nettle tea is a quiet way of supporting the body at that level.
Support for heavy periods (young girls & women)
This is one of the old uses and still one of the most relevant.
Nettle:
Supports iron levels
Helps maintain energy
Provides minerals needed during blood loss
Nettle provides natural support for iron levels, helping maintain energy during heavier menstrual cycles. It also supplies key minerals the body draws on during blood loss.
Taken as a tea, it offers gentle support without complication.
Skin support – especially teenagers
When skin is flaring, spots, congestion, breakouts, the body is often:
Under pressure
Slightly inflamed
Not clearing waste efficiently
The body often reflects internal imbalance rather than just surface issues.
Nettle supports the body by helping reduce inflammatory load, improving nutrient availability, and encouraging natural internal “clearing.”
It’s not a quick fix, but taken daily and over time, it brings a steadiness the skin responds well in a noticeable way, too.
Bladder and urinary support
Even as a simple tea, nettle supports normal kidney and urinary function.
It gently encourages fluid movement through the body without being harsh or depleting. This makes it particularly useful when the system feels sluggish or under strain.
It’s not harsh. It doesn’t deplete.
It supports the body in doing what it’s meant to do anyway.
How to Use It
Nettle doesn’t need complicated preparation. In fact, its strength lies in its simplicity.
A teaspoon or two of dried nettle steeped in hot water for 10–15 minutes is enough to create a mineral-rich infusion.
Taken once or twice daily, it becomes a steady support rather than a quick intervention.
Fresh young nettle in spring can also be used in soups or lightly steamed, offering the same benefits in a more food-based form.
With nettle, consistency matters far more than quantity.
RECAP:
✔️ Fresh nettle (spring)
Pick young tops (gloves recommended)
Use in soups, broths, or lightly steamed
Can also be used fresh for tea
✔️ Tea
1–2 teaspoons dried nettle per cup
Steep 10–15 minutes
Drink 1–3 cups daily
Consistency matters more than quantity.
A few practical notes
Avoid picking near roadsides or sprayed areas
If on diuretics or blood pressure medication, just be mindful
Pick young leaves in spring, when the plant is at its most vibrant
Avoid roadside or sprayed areas
Use gloves when harvesting fresh nettle
In most cases, nettle as a tea is safe and well tolerated
Final Thought
Nettle isn’t exotic. It’s not expensive. It doesn’t come in a glossy package.
And yet, every spring, it shows up offering exactly what the body often needs:
👉 nourishment 👉 support 👉 balance
Sometimes the simplest plants are the ones worth paying attention to.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

In everyday clinical practice, there is a quiet shift happening.
Patients are no longer relying solely on conventional medical care. Alongside prescribed treatments, many are turning to mindfulness, herbal medicine, traditional systems such as Ayurveda, and other complementary approaches to support their health.
What is striking is not that this is happening but that it is often happening without discussion.
Patients frequently do not disclose these choices. Not because they are careless, but because they anticipate dismissal. Over time, this has created a subtle but important gap in care, one where clinical oversight is absent, not by design, but by disconnect.
Patients Are Already There
This shift is not theoretical.
It is visible in daily practice:
Patients using breathing techniques to manage anxiety
People adopting dietary patterns based on traditional systems
A growing reliance on self-guided health approaches
Whether acknowledged or not, this is now part of modern healthcare behaviour.
The question is no longer if patients are engaging with these approaches, but whether healthcare is willing to recognise it.
Mindfulness: A Practical Clinical Tool
Mindfulness has moved beyond the realm of “wellness” and into something far more practical.
At its core, it supports regulation of the nervous system.
In clinical terms, this translates to:
Reduced sympathetic overdrive
Improved vagal tone
Better emotional regulation
Support in chronic stress, pain, and fatigue
For many patients, it is not an abstract concept. It is a tool that helps them cope, function, and stabilise.
And as one colleague recently put it: ‘sometimes it is the very thing that keeps a person steady in the middle of overwhelming pressure.’
Ayurveda and Observational Medicine
Long before laboratory diagnostics, systems such as Ayurveda developed structured ways of understanding human health.
These systems observed:
Individual constitution and variability
Digestive strength and metabolic patterns
The impact of routine, environment, and rhythm
While the language differs from modern medicine, the underlying principle is familiar:
People respond differently.
In clinical practice, we see this every day; variability in response to medication, recovery time, tolerance, and resilience.
Ancient systems simply approached this from a different starting point.
Where Metaphysics Meets Physiology
There is also a layer of health that is harder to measure, but impossible to ignore.
Thought patterns influence stress responses. Beliefs shape behaviours. Emotional states affect physiology.
We see this reflected in:
Chronic stress conditions
Sleep disturbance
Immune function
Recovery outcomes
We may not yet quantify every aspect of this, but its impact is visible in patient presentation and progression.
Ignoring it does not make it irrelevant.
The Irish Context: A Growing Divide
In Ireland, there remains a cautious, at times resistant, stance toward complementary approaches within formal healthcare structures.
Meanwhile, patients are moving in a different direction.
Patients are seeking:
Holistic support
Preventative approaches
Greater involvement in their own care
In contrast, other healthcare systems, such as in parts of Europe, have begun integrating complementary medicine into training and practice.
This creates an uncomfortable reality:
Patients are moving forward. Healthcare policy, in many cases, is standing still.
The Role of the Practitioner
This is not about replacing conventional medicine.
It is about acknowledging what is already happening and responding responsibly.
The role of the practitioner is to:
Create a space where patients feel safe to disclose
Understand potential interactions and risks
Offer grounded, evidence-informed guidance
Support without dismissing
Because when communication is absent, risk increases.
And when patients feel heard, care improves.
Closing Reflection
Patients are not waiting for permission to explore these approaches, they are already doing so.
The real question is whether healthcare chooses to ignore this shift, or to engage with it in a way that is safe, informed, and grounded in practice.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

YOU ARE NOT IMAGINING IT
Many people are told the same thing: “Your blood tests are normal.” And yet… you don’t feel normal.
Your energy is low. Your sleep isn’t refreshing. Your mood feels flat, anxious, or unpredictable. Your body just doesn’t feel right.
This is more common than you might think. And importantly: It does not mean nothing is wrong.
NORMAL” DOES NOT MEAN OPTIMAL
Standard blood tests are designed to detect disease. They are not designed to assess how well your body is functioning day to day.
A result can sit comfortably within range, yet still be:
low for your individual needs
poorly utilised by the body
insufficient during times of stress or recovery
This is where many people fall through the gap.
IT’S NOT JUST WHAT YOU TAKE, IT’S WHAT YOUR BODY CAN USE
You might be:
eating well
taking supplements
doing all the right things
And still feel depleted.
Why?
Because the body relies on multiple steps:
digestion
absorption
transport
cellular uptake
If any part of that chain is under strain, you can feel the effects long before anything shows up on a lab report.
THE MISSING PIECE IS OFTERN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
One of the most overlooked factors is nervous system load. Modern life keeps the body in a constant state of low-grade stress, ongoing alertness, and overstimulation. Over time, this begins to affect energy production, sleep quality, digestion, and hormone balance.
Many people describe it simply as: “I can’t switch off.” That alone can keep the body from restoring properly.
THIS IS WHERE WHOLISTIC CARE COMES IN.
In practice at Holistic Healthcare Wexford, this pattern shows up more and more frequently. People often arrive feeling dismissed, frustrated, and unsure where to turn next. This work is not about replacing medical care. It is about supporting the body’s function, identifying where things are under strain, and helping the system return to balance.
This may include nervous system support, targeted nutritional guidance, and gentle, body-led therapies.
YOU ARE NOT “FINE”. YOU ARE EARLY.
Feeling “off” is often an early signal, not a dead end.
Your body is communicating. It just hasn’t reached the point of disease. And that is exactly where the greatest opportunity for change exists.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NEXT
If this resonates with you, start simple:
Pause and acknowledge how you actually feel
Look at your sleep, stress, and daily load
Do not dismiss your symptoms just because tests are “normal”
If you feel you need support:
A holistic consultation can help you make sense of what your body is showing you and what to do next.
FINAL THOUGHT
You know your body. If something feels off, it is worth listening. Not everything shows up on paper. But that does not make it any less real.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

You can take Vitamin D, Magnesium, and Calcium—and still not get the results you expect. Sometimes, the missing piece is not what you take, but what helps your body use it.
By Dr Catherine W. Dunne, MSc.D., RGN (GPN) Holistic Healthcare Wexford
Boron is one of those nutrients.
It may only be required in trace amounts, but its impact on bone health, hormones, inflammation, and Vitamin D function makes it a valuable addition to a well-structured health plan.
Bone Health: More Than Just Calcium
When it comes to bones, most people think of Calcium. But Calcium alone is only part of the picture.
Boron helps the body to improve Calcium retention, enhance Magnesium utilisation, and support Vitamin D activation. This creates a more efficient system for maintaining bone density and strength.
Emerging research also suggests Boron may help reduce joint discomfort and stiffness, particularly in osteoarthritis, by supporting a balanced inflammatory response.
In clinical practice, this is often seen in patients whose bone markers or symptoms do not improve despite adequate Calcium and Vitamin D intake.
A Natural Anti-Inflammatory Support
Chronic, low-grade inflammation is at the root of many modern health concerns.
Boron has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers such as CRP, modulate immune responses, and support tissue recovery.
This makes it a useful addition in cases of joint pain, post-viral fatigue, and general inflammatory states.
In clinical settings, this may be relevant in patients presenting with persistent low-grade inflammatory symptoms.
Hormonal Balance: A Quiet Regulator
One of Boron’s most interesting roles is its influence on hormones.
It has been shown to influence free testosterone levels, support healthy oestrogen metabolism, and reduce sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).
This means more hormones are available in their active form, which may benefit perimenopause, menopause, and low energy states.
Boron and Vitamin D: A Powerful Partnership
Boron plays a supportive role in how the body uses Vitamin D.
It helps extend the half-life of Vitamin D, improve Magnesium efficiency, and support proper Calcium direction alongside Vitamin K2.
Together, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Vitamin K2, and Boron create a more balanced and effective system.
Boron may also play a supportive role in thyroid function through its interaction with mineral balance and hormone regulation.
This is how these nutrients work together in the body:
Cognitive and Nervous System Support
Low Boron intake has been associated with reduced concentration, slower cognitive processing, and brain fog.
Adequate levels may support mental clarity and neurological function.
Dietary Sources of Boron
Boron is found naturally in avocados, raisins, prunes, nuts (especially almonds), and leafy green vegetables.
However, modern diets often provide lower than optimal intake.
Supplementation
Typical intake ranges from 3 mg daily for general support, with 6 mg often used in short-term therapeutic protocols.
There is rarely a need to exceed this range.
Safety Considerations
Avoid high doses in pregnancy and use caution in kidney disease. As with all nutrients, balance is key.
Clinical Perspective
Boron is often the missing link in protocols where bone support, Vitamin D response, hormonal balance, or inflammation management are not progressing as expected.
Final Thoughts
Boron helps the body use what is already there more efficiently. In many cases, health does not improve because something is missing but because what is already there is not being used properly.
Boron does not replace your core nutrients, it helps them work properly.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

For many years we were told something simple about bone health:
By Dr Catherine W. Dunne MSc.D., RGN Holistic HealthCare Wexford & Aumvedas Academy Nurse, Medical Intuitive and Holistic Practitioner
Take calcium and a little vitamin D.
But modern research is showing that calcium metabolism is far more sophisticated than that. The body relies on a small team of nutrients working together — most importantly vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2.
When these nutrients are balanced, calcium is more likely to support healthy bones rather than accumulating in places where it should not be.
Understanding how this system works can help us make better choices for long-term health.
What do vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2 do together?
Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium from food, magnesium activates vitamin D so it can function properly, and vitamin K2 directs calcium into bones while helping prevent deposits in arteries and soft tissues. Together, these nutrients support healthy calcium balance, bone strength and overall metabolic health.
Vitamin D3 – The Sunshine Signal
Vitamin D is often called a vitamin, but in reality it behaves more like a hormone.
Production begins in the skin when ultraviolet-B sunlight converts a cholesterol-related molecule called 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3.
Once activated by the liver and kidneys, vitamin D influences hundreds of genes involved in:
• calcium absorption • immune regulation • inflammation control • muscle strength • bone metabolism
One of its most important roles is helping the body absorb calcium from food.
Without sufficient vitamin D, the body may absorb only a small fraction of the calcium we eat.
Low vitamin D levels have also been associated in research studies with a range of conditions including:
• osteoporosis • autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis • certain cancers including breast and bowel cancer.
This does not mean vitamin D alone prevents these diseases, but it highlights how important it is in maintaining normal physiological balance.
Magnesium – The Quiet Enabler
Here is a fact that many people do not realise.
Vitamin D cannot function properly without magnesium.
Magnesium is required for the enzymes that activate vitamin D in the body. Without adequate magnesium, vitamin D may remain largely inactive.
Magnesium also plays important roles in:
• parathyroid hormone regulation • nerve and muscle function • heart rhythm stability • bone mineralisation.
Unfortunately magnesium deficiency has become common in modern diets due to soil depletion, processed foods and certain medications.
When magnesium levels are low, increasing calcium intake alone often fails to correct imbalances.
Vitamin K2 – The Calcium Guide
If vitamin D increases calcium absorption, another important question arises:
Where does that calcium go?
Vitamin K2 helps answer that question.
This nutrient activates specialised proteins that guide calcium into the bones while helping prevent calcium deposits in arteries and soft tissues.
Two important vitamin K2-dependent proteins include:
• Osteocalcin, which binds calcium into the bone matrix • Matrix GLA protein, which helps prevent vascular calcification.
In simple terms, vitamin K2 acts like a traffic controller for calcium, helping ensure it strengthens bones rather than accumulating where it does not belong.
Why Calcium From Food Is Often Preferable
Calcium is clearly important for bone health, but more is not always better.
Many people can obtain adequate calcium through foods such as:
• dairy products • leafy green vegetables • almonds and sesame seeds • small fish eaten with bones.
Supplements may be appropriate in certain situations, but high calcium intake without sufficient vitamin D, magnesium and K2 may not support healthy calcium balance.
For this reason, many clinicians now emphasise dietary calcium alongside nutrient balance rather than relying solely on supplements.
Vitamin D and the Immune System
Beyond bone health, vitamin D plays an important role in immune regulation.
Immune cells contain vitamin D receptors, and adequate levels appear to help maintain balanced immune responses.
Researchers have explored links between vitamin D status and conditions such as:
• multiple sclerosis • autoimmune diseases • breast cancer • colorectal (bowel) cancer.
While vitamin D is not a treatment for these conditions, maintaining healthy levels may support the body’s natural defence systems.
Interestingly, the prevalence of multiple sclerosis increases in populations living further from the equator, where sunlight exposure — and therefore vitamin D production — is lower.
A Simple Way to Think About the System
Instead of focusing on a single nutrient, it helps to think of calcium regulation as a partnership.
Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium.
Magnesium activates vitamin D and supports metabolic processes.
Vitamin K2 directs calcium into bones and away from soft tissues.
Calcium provides the structural building blocks for bones and teeth.
When these nutrients work together, the body is better able to maintain balance.
Diagram showing how Vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2 work together to regulate calcium and support bone health.
Supporting Healthy Nutrient Levels
Some practical ways to support this system include:
• sensible sunlight exposure where possible • eating a varied diet rich in vegetables, nuts and seeds • including fermented foods or high-quality dairy where tolerated • discussing testing or supplementation with a healthcare professional when appropriate.
Every individual is different, and personalised guidance is always best.
Health rarely depends on one nutrient or one supplement.
The body works through networks of nutrients and signals, each supporting the other.
Understanding how vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2 interact gives us a clearer picture of how the body manages calcium, supports bone health and maintains overall wellbeing.
Sometimes the most effective approach is simply helping the body restore its natural balance.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

Fanta Zero, Coca-Cola Zero, 7-Up Free, Sprite Zero, Lucozade Zero, Pepsi Max and their likes. Here is a little research I have done for you.
I am looking at the health impact of Zero Diet Sodas and what damage they cause to our body.
“Zero” sodas are marketed as the healthier option because they contain no sugar, no calories, no guilt. But does zero sugar really mean zero impact on health?
The short answer is no.
Let’s look at what’s actually inside these drinks and how they affect the body — particularly the kidneys, bones, metabolism, and gut.
What Are “Zero” Sodas? “Zero” or diet sodas remove sugar and calories, replacing them with artificial sweeteners and acids to preserve sweetness and flavour. They typically contain:
Carbonated water
Artificial sweeteners (most commonly aspartame, often combined with acesulfame-K)
Acids (citric acid or phosphoric acid)
Flavourings
They are called “Zero” because they contain no calories, not because they are biologically neutral.
Aspartame: The Ingredient Most People Don’t Question Most Zero sodas contain aspartame. Aspartame breaks down in the body into:
Phenylalanine
Aspartic acid
Small amounts of methanol
In occasional use, aspartame is generally tolerated by healthy adults. Concerns arise with regular, long-term daily consumption.
Effects on the Kidneys Large population studies consistently show that frequent diet soda consumption is associated with:
Faster decline in kidney function (eGFR)
Increased risk of chronic kidney disease
Higher rates of hypertension and metabolic stress
These effects are not caused by carbonation, but are likely related to:
Changes in gut microbiota
Increased oxidative stress
Insulin and blood-pressure dysregulation
Chronic low-grade inflammation
Plain sparkling water does not show these associations.
Effects on Bone Health Many Zero sodas — particularly colas — still contain phosphoric acid. High phosphorus intake without adequate calcium can:
Disrupt calcium balance
Increase calcium loss through urine
Reduce bone mineral density over time
Long-term diet soda consumption has been linked to lower bone density, especially in post-menopausal women.
Again, these effects are not seen with plain fizzy water.
Effects on Metabolism and Appetite Despite being calorie-free, artificial sweeteners can:
Trigger insulin release in some individuals
Disrupt hunger and satiety signalling
Increase cravings for sweet foods later
Alter dopamine reward pathways
In practice, many people who consume diet sodas regularly do not lose weight, and some gain weight over time.
The body does not like being tricked.
Effects on Gut Health Artificial sweeteners can alter gut bacteria, leading to:
Reduced glucose tolerance
Increased inflammatory signalling
Impaired mineral absorption
Gut health plays a direct role in kidney health, bone health, and metabolic balance.
What “Zero” Sodas Are — and Are Not
✔ Better than sugar-sweetened sodas ✖ Not kidney-protective ✖ Not bone-supportive ✖ Not metabolically neutral
They remove sugar, not physiological consequences.
Who Should Be Especially Careful? This is something no General Practitioner (GP)/Family Doctor or Hospital Consultant tells you. Regular consumption of Zero sodas is best avoided in people with:
Kidney disease or reduced kidney function
Hypertension
Osteopenia or osteoporosis
Diabetes or insulin resistance
Migraine disorders
Gut sensitivity or IBS
Healthier Alternatives If you enjoy fizz:
Sparkling mineral water
Sparkling water with lemon or lime
Herbal iced teas
Kombucha (in moderation)
If you want sweetness:
Small amounts of real juice diluted with sparkling water – this is what I like doing.
The Bottom Line Zero sodas are not toxic, but they are not health drinks.
An occasional one is unlikely to cause harm. A daily habit over years is where issues quietly accumulate.
Zero calories does not mean zero impact.
I hope you feel inspired. Look after your body, and it will keep you healthy.

Anyone who wants to try out the effect of a remedy unknown to them first seeks to understand its underlying substance. They want to understand its properties and how it works. So, let’s start with the question: What is colloidal silver? The term colloid is little known. However, we deal with colloids on a daily basis. Yes, our lives are even based on colloidal systems. For a better understanding, let us first approach the explanation from the scientific side before turning to the practical meaning. Still, since colloid chemistry is an extremely extensive field, only the most important basics necessary for the understanding of colloidal silver shall be discussed here:
A colloid is a system in which the smallest particles are extremely finely distributed. These particles consist of few atoms to a few thousand atoms and usually have a size of a few to 200 nanometers. One nanometer corresponds to one billionth of a meter. The proportions are illustrated in the following table. A human red blood cell, for example, has a diameter of 7.5 micrometers (= 7500 nanometers), i.e. it is almost forty times larger than such a giant colloid particle with a diameter of 200 nanometers. For a better understanding, some measurements are set in relation to each other below:
1 m
1 meter
= 1000 mm
= one thousand millimeters
= 1000000 μm
= one million microns
= 1000000000 nm
= one Billion Nanometers
= 10000000000 Å
= ten billion Ångström
Object
Size
Silver ion (Ag+ )
0.115 nm (= 1.15 Ångström)
Silver atom
0.175 nm (= 1.75 Angstrom)
Glucose molecule
0.7 nm (= 7 Angstrom)
Colloidal Silver (ca. 15 Atome)
1–5 nm (= 10–50 Ångström)
Virus
20–300 nm (= 0,02–0,3 micrometers)
Bacteria
200–80 000 nm (= 0,2–80 micrometers)
Red blood cell
7 500 nm (= 7,5 micrometers)
Human Hair Diameter
40 000–100 000 nm (= 40–100 micrometers)
Human Egg
150 000 nm (= 150 micrometers)
Yet, colloidal silver produced with a generator is much smaller. It consists of only a few atoms and has a diameter of only about one to five nanometers. This colloidal silver is thus many times smaller than a red blood cell or a giant bacterium. Such a ratio is roughly equivalent to the difference in size between a cat and Mount Everest. Compared to the smallest bacteria, a particle of a silver colloid is still almost 2000 times smaller. This relationship is about as if an adult person were standing in front of the Grossglockner Mountain.
What are the benefits of Colloidal Silver?
Case notes of some experience with many diseases:
Therapeutic colloidal silver is a universal, almost side-effect-free remedy for the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Many publications have shown that it is effective against bacteria (e.g. staphylococci and streptococci), viruses and fungi (e.g. the yeast fungus Candida albicans). These pathogens are all killed within a few minutes by colloidal silver. Interestingly, the “useful” bacteria in the large intestine, which are important for the human organism, are usually spared, as colloidal silver is absorbed in the small intestine and at the latest, absorbed into the bloodstream or lymph. In some cases, however, it is also desirable for colloidal silver to act in the large intestine. Colloidal silver can also be used for diseases whose causes are not or not fully known.
In the meantime, the successful effect of colloidal silver has been described for a huge spectrum of diseases. It is effective for several hundred different clinical pictures. Especially at the beginning of the 20th century, its effectiveness was intensively studied by numerous well-known scientists, who published the results in renowned medical journals such as Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association and British Medical Journal (i.e. Courtenay 1997). After a long break, interest in silver and colloidal silver had sharply declined. However, research has been very active again for several years.
In a wide variety of fields, the healing power of silver is once again being scientifically dealt with and the old findings and experiences are also being proven with new methods. Diseases for which experience with colloidal silver has been made include numerous complaints of the eyes, respiratory tract, skin, motor apparatus and nervous system. Considering that a broad-spectrum antibiotic (against bacterial infections) or a broad-spectrum antifungal (against fungal infections) can only kill some of the pathogens and resistance can easily form, this is an enormous advantage. An antibiotic is only effective against a small number of different pathogens and never against viruses. In addition, the intake of colloidal silver is almost free of side effects, while chemical substances can usually have many and strong side effects.
A frequently asked question is whether colloidal silver is also effective against emerging pathogens, such as HIV (AIDS pathogen), H5N1 (bird flu virus) or SARS-CoV (coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome). Unfortunately, there are no studies on this yet, so one can only assume that colloidal silver also helps against these viruses. An overview of the wide range of applications of colloidal silver in humans, animals and plants can be found in a separate book (Pies and Reinelt 2010). In addition to descriptions of the clinical pictures, it also contains concrete information on the use of colloidal silver. Of the numerous diseases listed in the literature that are or have been treated with colloidal silver, some are listed below as examples. Many users swear by the preventive effect of colloidal silver against colds and flu. For example, about a quarter of users take colloidal silver for respiratory diseases (Pies and Reinelt 2010). This was already known a century ago. Searle (1920) writes: “Colloidal silver has been shown to be useful in influenza, both for prevention and cure, by being used as a nasal spray, eye bath, or gargle.” The principle of wound treatment with silver coatings or silver plasters, which has been rediscovered today, is based on the same idea as wound treatment with colloidal silver: In addition to silver sulfadiazine, which was introduced in 1968, silver ion-releasing wound dressings and dressings are mainly used today (Thomas and McCubbin 2003). In addition to anti-inflammatory, silver ions also promote the formation of new epithelial tissue and accelerate wound healing. In the early healing phase, more silver is absorbed by the wound tissue than later. This is obviously related to the fact that the healthy tissue (epithelium) is a partial barrier for the silver. So it has a double effect here, because protection against infections is of the utmost importance after a burn, for example. It is possible that colloidal silver supports the production of undifferentiated cells, which are necessary for the replacement of aged or damaged cells (see: Since when has colloidal silver been known?). This may happen by positively influencing controlled cell death (apoptosis) by silver ions. Experimental studies have found that silver also stimulates the formation of special proteins, so-called metallothionein, in the epithelial cells (Landsdown 2002b). These proteins serve to detoxify the body from heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury and promote wound healing. Silver foil made of thinly rolled, sterile silver has been widely used for wound treatment since about 1900 (silver is the most elastic metal after gold and can be processed into 0.0027 millimeter thin sheets). This prevents excessive fluid loss and promotes new tissue formation. In the case of burns and scalds, however, it is also important to prevent infections with pathogens. Silver also makes an important contribution to this as a foil and in colloidal form. It was Dr. William Halstead (1852–1922), one of the fathers of modern surgery, who popularized silver foil for wound covering. This principle was used intensively until the Second World War, but then became a victim of the triumphal march of antibiotics. For some years now, the principle has been experiencing a renaissance in the form of silver-coated wound dressings and plasters (cf. silver dust and silver threads). Hydrocolloid dressings are available as medical devices for antimicrobial wet wound treatment.
The effect is based, among other things, on the release of silver ions into the wound. Lyme disease (erythema migrans disease) was first described in 1976 in the US town of Lyme. It is usually transmitted by ticks and caused by a bacterium, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. In the course of the disease, cardiac and neurological symptoms as well as arthritis of the large joints can occur. Courtenay (1997) points out that patients who were treated in vain with various antibiotics for three years or more became symptom-free with three to four weeks of therapy with colloidal silver. The average time it takes to rid the body of the pathogen is three to nine months. However, a yeast infection (caused by Candida albicans) often complicates the therapy, which requires an extension of the duration of treatment, according to Courtenay. The Dresden physician Dr. Wilfried Krickau has also made very good healing successes with colloidal silver in the concomitant therapy of Lyme disease (Krickau 2005). As with antibiotic therapy, however, it must be borne in mind that a negative serological result does not necessarily mean the complete healing of Lyme disease.
*** Please never try to treat serious illnesses on your own but entrust yourself to an experienced doctor or alternative practitioner. ***
They can be triggered by different fungi and can be very disturbing. They are often associated with itching, redness or even painful skin cracks (rhagades). Fungal skin diseases often pose a major health and cosmetic problem for affected people at the same time. Conventional treatment often takes a long time, and relapses often occur.
Courtenay (1997) reports that the symptoms can be controlled within two to three days with local application with colloidal silver. But there are also stubborn cases that require more patience.
Psoriasis is a disease whose predisposition is inherited, and which is considered incurable. It is an extremely annoying illness that can also be psychologically stressful. Their outbreak can be triggered by various factors (including bacteria and viruses). The disease manifests itself through increased dandruff formation and occurs preferably on the elbows, knees, hairy head, palms and soles of the feet, as well as in body folds. However, the whole body can also be affected. Courtenay (1997) describes that normal skin grows back after just three weeks through the application of colloidal silver, but the therapy can also take three to eighteen months, depending on the previous treatment. Patients regularly report good experiences with colloidal silver in psoriasis (Pies and Reinelt 2010).
However, the disease can break out again and again. Inflammation of the mouth is very common. They can affect the gums, tongue or cheeks and can have various causes. Sometimes they are very painful and disturbing and can even make it difficult to speak or eat. It is reported that those affected have recovered very quickly due to colloidal silver. After a short, low-dose application, most were able to eat again, and a complete regression of the infection was achieved after two to four days by taking colloidal silver four times a day.
Herpes simplex is caused by a virus and manifests itself through recurrent localized, grouped blisters. Depending on the diseased area of the body, we speak of herpes facialis (face), herpes labialis (lips), herpes nasalis (nose), herpes buccalis (cheeks) or genital herpes (genital organs). The symptoms are often triggered by stressful life situations of the infected person. The first signs of a new flare-up are itching and sensitivity to pain in the affected area. The annoying bubbles then form. According to Courtenay (1997), topical application (topical application) of colloidal silver can prevent blistering in half of the cases at the first symptoms. If they do occur, it is usually milder than without immediate treatment. Their regression is also positively influenced by colloidal silver. They disappear again in half the usual time.
Herpes zoster (shingles), another viral disease that can be very painful, is also described as a successful treatment with colloidal silver. Many people will wonder if colloidal silver can cure AIDS. The more severely a person is affected by a disease and the more hopeless its treatment is, the greater the hopes for every new drug and for every new treatment method. Especially in the case of HIV infections, new drugs and drug combinations have been able to achieve better and better success in recent years. In this way, the onset of AIDS can be significantly delayed and the treatment of concomitant diseases has also been improved enormously. Although AIDS has not yet become curable, the quality of life of those affected has been improved and their life expectancy has been greatly extended. Although it is described that the AIDS pathogen, the HI virus, just like other viruses, is killed with colloidal silver in vitro (in the test tube), a cure for AIDS has unfortunately not yet been achieved. In HIV-infected people, otherwise harmless germs cause so-called opportunistic diseases because of the weakened immune system. Therefore, colloidal silver should also be suitable as a natural agent for these people to support the immune system, especially since it is well tolerated. Many of these opportunistic diseases are caused by single-celled organisms (bacteria, fungi or viruses). These include, for example, cytomegaloviruses, herpes simplex viruses, candida, salmonella, mycobacterium, tubercle bacillus and toxoplasma. If you are interested in experiencing colloidal silver in AIDS, it is best to contact a regional support group. But the homepage of the AIDS Project Los Angeles (www.apla.org) also provides information on this. As part of the FDA’s call for statements regarding colloidal silver (book: Why all the fuss?) an interesting article by a doctor on the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign enlargement of the prostate) was also submitted.
He reports on a double-blind clinical study on 22 men aged 50 to 82 in whom he had treated nocturia (i.e. an increased urge to urinate at night). Patients reported getting up one to five times during the night. 15 patients (verum group) were treated with colloidal silver and seven with placebo (colored water). The dose was one teaspoon each of a finished product in the morning and in the evening over 19 to 23 days. Four patients from the verum group subsequently reported a decrease in going to the toilet at night from two to four times to only once. Five (as well as one from the placebo group) reported a general improvement in nocturia. Subsequently, all study participants took one teaspoon of colloidal silver per day for eight weeks.
After another four weeks, 16 participants (one had dropped out of the study) reported improvement, while five reported no progress. In this context, the successful treatment of night tripper (inflammation of the prostate as a result of gonorrhea) is also interesting. To do this, the physician James Mac Munn injected colloidal silver into the prostate through an endoscope (Mac Munn 1917). After the “anthrax letters” following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, the question immediately arose as to whether one could protect oneself against the anthrax pathogen with colloidal silver. In fact, it has been known since 1887 that silver is very effective against the anthrax pathogen (Bechhold 1919 and Dean 2001). This pathogen had been discovered eleven years earlier by the famous Robert Koch (1843–1910). Even though he is better known today for his work on tuberculosis, Koch owed his professional advancement to the discovery of the anthrax pathogen Bacillus antracis in 1876, because this was actually his first object of study. We owe his work not only the reduction of cholera and tuberculosis, but also that of the highly contagious anthrax. Even today, anthrax is widespread worldwide, especially in countries with little intensive animal disease control. Especially people who often come into contact with animals or animal carcasses (farmers, veterinarians, etc.) are potentially at risk of contracting anthrax. However, the “anthrax letters” at the end of 2001 clearly showed that danger also threatens from other sides, because the laboratories of the “civilized war industry” are not as safe as generally assumed, since the pathogens used at that time obviously came from such laboratories.
As a preventive measure, in connection with the “anthrax letters”, official bodies recommended the early administration of antibiotics to people at risk. However, it is warned not to do this on your own. If necessary, the medicines (penicillin for pulmonary and intestinal anthrax or ciprofloxacin or doxycycline for cutaneous anthrax) are available in sufficient quantities. Although there are no studies on whether colloidal silver can prevent infection with anthrax in humans or animals, since it kills the pathogen, it can be assumed that taking colloidal silver can at least support the body’s own defenses. If there is a concrete suspicion of infection with the anthrax pathogen, professional help must be sought in any case. At this point, it should be emphasized once again that colloidal silver does really amazing things in many cases, but it is not a miracle cure (Pies 2010). They can use it to fight many pathogens – also preventively – or support the cure of diseases.

Seasonal viruses
Before 2020 we were all aware of the Winter Flu and it would come three days, stay three days and go three days. We never took a week off work because of this. We maybe took 2 to 3 days max off. We treated the symptoms with paracetamol or Lemsips or Ibuprofen, cough syrups, hot water bottles, and bed.
Then something strange happened. Something, so it seems, has been in the making since 2005 or earlier. The Holistic side of medicines was getting too strong and instead of the pharmaceutical industry to become part of it, they declared war on us. Why? No €€€ to be made of what is naturally present.
In Ireland 2016 we were told from now on we are not allowed to claim we can heal you from cancer. Not long before that Homeopathy was made illegal as not licensed and so on. And now it difficult to practice homeopathy. Nature’s Apothecary. Herbalism is next. Ginko Baloba is illegal. Wintergreen is illegal. In Ireland that is.
Viruses
Today we still have winter flus. Except they are now called covid, rsv, Influenza A, …..
Influenza A is not new. It has always been around and GPs and Paediatricians alike have always treated children with it. Parents were never put into a panic zone because your child could die. This is what the industry is throwing out into the media today.
Herbal treatments for sinusitis
Sinusitis. Blocked sinuses. What did we used to do? Steam inhalation with salt and water. I’m surprised at how many either don’t know about this or simply have forgotten. Quick fix is required today. Patience left in 2020.
Thick mucous and raised and high temperatures: avoid dairy. Why? Dairy thickens the mucous further.
Why did our mammies cook stews in the winter? Because oregano and thyme could be added. Sage also. Sage is anti microbial. Thyme is a great antiviral healer. Oregano great antibiotic.
If you have stuffy nose, increased mucous flow and a sinus headache ache, don’t use Vicks Vapour Rub for steam inhalations. Why? The menthol within this salve, will offer temporary sinus relief but the rebound effect is twice as bad. So what to use instead? Eucalyptus Salt
But rub Vicks onto the soles of your feet every night and wear socks to bed. Safe for children from 12 months and adults. In case you didn’t know, our body and organs are mirrored in the soles of our feet. Reflexology and aromatherapy.
Drink plenty tea made with fresh lemons, ginger or dehydrated ginger roots. Local honey. Local honey is sooooo important. Not only because you are supporting local bee keepers but you are taking local pollen in. Great healer. Do this 3x daily.
Or if you own one, Infrared lamp treatment for sinuses. Every household in Germany owns one. No more than 10 min sessions. Keep eyes closed! Do this 3-4 x daily.
Cough
But, I’m coughing! I hear you say. Next question is: dry cough or productive cough?
Dry cough caused by tickle in back of throat? Blame yourself for having stoves and central heating on without a source of water beside it. Start now. Add moisture back into the air. This also helps heat up rooms faster than dry air. Take an antihistamine. This will stop the tickle, which stops the coughing.
Productive cough. What colour is phlegm? Green-grey? Antibiotics plus steam inhalations with salt or eucalyptus or thyme essential oil.
***Thyme is aggressive as an essential oil. So use no more than 2 drops when doing steam inhalations.
Clear to yellow phlegm: if liquid like, as in runny, bubbles, make your own cough syrup with thyme, onion, cloves and honey or unrefined brown sugar. – boil one onion in skin in about 1-1.5 inch of water. Best cut onion horizontally in half and face down into pot. Put lid on and bring to a boil. Boil for about 3 minutes, reduce heat, continue to simmer. Add 3 cloves and 2x tbsp dried thyme or one twig of fresh thyme. Simmer for further 10 min. Remove heat. As it is cooling add the honey or brown sugar to taste. Stir till dissolved. Poor through a sieve and drink as warm as you can. Keep your chest warm. Don’t do this before bed time. You won’t thank me for it 🤪
Phlegm is clear to yellow and thicker: drink plenty ginger tea with local honey. Ginger is warming and helps break up mucous. One additional note: make sure the country of origin of ginger is NOT China. You do not want to know how or in what or with what the grow garlic, ginger …..
Raised, high temperature, fever
I have the shivers, feeling cold but also have a fever.
***Fever is defined as body temperature of 38.5C and higher.
Hot water bottles come in handy. If you have Schüssler Tissue Salt number 4 (in UK and Ireland number 4 is 3 in Europe) this can help. Sage for children too. Ginger and Clove tea and local honey. Or fresh lemon and local honey tea 3x daily. Plus if you have collected Meadow Sweet and Self Heal during the summer, add to tea.
Remembering old sayings
Remember the old saying: colds (most called them flu but it wasn’t influenza) come 3 days, stay 3 days, and go 3 days. Influenza on the other hand, has you “ nailed” to the bed and not even a sack with loads of money would make you get up!
Hoping this was of some use to you. Get well Stay well Keep family well.
